Top 5 (Surprising) Collabs
The past year has seen a lot of new music and provided us with some unexpected collabs that threw us for a loop; whether that'd be a good or bad loop. The artists crossed their lines with their audiences and even went into new genres. Most of the songs have been great and catchy at the same time in being different than what they have produced before. I'm breaking down the top 5 collabs of the past year that threw us for a loop.
5. Drop That Kitty - Ty Dolla $ign, Charli XCX, and Tinashe
I hadn't heard this song until it was performed at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards. Tinahse and Ty Dolla are an understandable collab, but then Charli XCX comes in with the hook too! It is such an interesting collab in how Charli is crossing genre into the rap scene, but she has worked with Iggy Azalea which she is in the rap scene too. However, Iggy has a way of adding a pop sound and radio play to her music, but Ty Dolla $ign doesn't as much. It was and odd collab at first, but then the more I listened to it, the more I loved it. Charli adds such a great, cathcy hook that will have everyone singing along too. I love the song, despite how weird the video is, and can't stop jamming to it.
Rihanna was on a hiatus with music for a bit, but didn't let us down with her surprise single. Rihanna's announced single off of her currently untitled album was a collab, but a random one to say the least. Kanye West is in Rihanna's new song, but so is Paul McCartney. Paul makes a cameo in her single and broadens his audience in a whole new level. Many of her fans were trying to figure out who this Paul guy was, and many even thought he was a new artist that Rihanna was helping bring to the public eye. Wrong! Kids these days. Overall, Rihanna launched FourFiveSeconds as her newest single and followed it up with B*tch Better Have My Money to promote her still untitled album.
Furious 7 was one of the most anticipated movies this spring and the soundtrack didn't disappoint either. The soundtrack included many songs with artists that included Wiz Khalifa, Iggy Azalea, Skylar Grey, Dillon Francis, and some guy named Charlie Puth. If you asked anyone who this Charlie guy was, they would most likely look at you with a blank stare, but thanks to a song; he is now topping the charts. Charlie and Wiz collaborated on an emotional song called "See you again" that immediatley topped the charts when the movie was released. The emotional song hit home with Paul Walkers death and was honestly a great song. Charlie made the right move in collaborating on this song because now his name is better known. He went from a "who?" to an artists that thousands of people are tearing up to in "Furious 7". I can't wait to hear more from this artist.
After Lady Gaga's "Artpop" album, she decided to take a break from pop music and put her passion into another project that had all the buzz. Who had any idea where she was going? No one. Lady Gaga was filled in rumors that she was working with Tony Bennett, the legendary Jazz artist. Rumors were true and their album, "Cheek to Cheek" came out! Despite the 59 years age difference between the two artists, they made wonderful music together. Cheek to Cheek even won a grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocals. It was amazing to see Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett so happy in their work they produced. They also had many live performances in which you could tell they were happier than ever before when singing during them. The surprise jazz work was such a switch up, but Lady Gaga's voice was made for it and it sure broaden her as an artists. It has people listening to her that they would have never before, but it was a good way for Gaga to enhance her fanbase without losing who she is as an artist.
Jimmy Fallon is notorious for his awesome and hilarious personality as well as his "EW!" series on his late night talk show, but his episode with Will.I.Am put them both on the charts. The song they sang during the episode went to Itunes and became #3 on Billboards Trending 140; which looks at the fastest moving songs on Twitter. It was a defining moment for Jimmy Fallon, proving that he rules at late night and can even rule the charts.
4.FourFiveSeconds - Rihanna

1.Bang Bang - Jessie J, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj
Finally, the number one collab of the past year has to be "Bang Bang" for obvious reasons. The collab didn't really throw anyone for a loop, but rather has everyone jamming out to for years to come. Jessie J, Ariana Grande, and Nicki Minaj teamed up for an epic collab that will go down in history. The song brought together three powerhouse artists that all are talented in their own ways to provide us all with a masterpiece of a song. Who is still rapping Nicki's verse in their car? I am. It grew these fan bases together by having these artists work together and simply gave us a hit we could all jam out too.Honorable Mention:
Jimmy Fallon and Will.I.Am
Jimmy Fallon is notorious for his awesome and hilarious personality as well as his "EW!" series on his late night talk show, but his episode with Will.I.Am put them both on the charts.
