Tidal For All

Jay Z is at the forefront of the newest project that swept talk on social media. Nicki Minaj, Jason Aldean, Madonna, Beyonce, Calvin Harris, Rihanna, Usher, and Kanye West are just some of the artists behind the Tidal project. These are some huge names to be collaborating on a project, but what exactly is Tidal? I had the same question and was wondering what the hype was about it.

Tidal is a music streaming service that will compete against the hugely successful Spotify, and Apple's expected subscription streaming service. Tidal will only be available through a paid subscription and it has a two tiered subscription option that will be based on audio quality; one will be a compressed format, and the other one will be CD- quality streams. Now I know you are thinking the same thing I was which is "What makes this streaming service different than others?". Tidal will be the first streaming service to be owned by the music artists from many genres. It ranges from Arcade Fire, to Nicki Minaj as artists who own and will be consistently involved in the service. Tidal will not only provide the music, but it will also offer exclusive content from the artists to their fans. The Tidal announcement on March 30th, brought together these artists for the debut of its movement. The artists mentioned that this collaboration is a way to cherish art, to bring together the many creative minds in music, and to bring art back to the forefront of music. The artists also mentioned how tech companies think of them as products, and they don't want to be thought in that way anymore. I'm very interested to see how Tidal moves forward, and what impact this will have on the streaming industry and in music in general.

My Thoughts

I think that this movement will be a good one for the streaming industry because the artists will have full control of the atmosphere of the app, and what it all will allow. There will be no one telling them what to do, but rather the artists bouncing ideas off of each other with themselves in control. I think it will be interesting to see what the artists will provide on this streaming platform other than just access to their music. It is good to see such powerful artists get together for a movement in the dominant streaming industry that will offer something unique and less commercial to the industry.
